Interview with Mike Batra, Managing Director of Dr. Wamser + Batra GmbH, published in Manager Magazine on the topic of “India”.
“India is making life increasingly difficult for Western companies. How German companies can protect themselves from adversity if they want to do business in India. The experiences of German business people with their partners in India are often bitter. For some investors, the subcontinent is even turning into a disaster. In its May issue, manager magazin uses spectacular cases - from Porsche to Bayer to Fraport - to describe how legal uncertainty, arbitrariness from authorities and corruption are becoming ever more widespread. But there are problems not only with the country's institutions. German-Indian joint ventures also often cause trouble. Promises suddenly no longer apply, deadlines are not met and the numbers in the accounting have nothing to do with reality. No wonder, then, that 50 percent of all German-Indian joint ventures fail within the first three years, according to a study by management consultancy Dr. Wamser + Batra. “The Germans themselves are often to blame for the fiasco,” says managing director Mike D. Batra. The consultant, who specializes in India, knows of cases where German managers met an Indian entrepreneur at an international trade fair and were impressed by his eloquence and charm. The Indian presented himself excellently, he described his dense network of contacts - and the first business contact was initiated. “The Germans often overestimate their Indian counterparts,” says Batra, “they believe they have the super Indian in front of them and then agree to a partnership far too quickly.” (Source: Manager Magazin Online, April 25.04.2013, XNUMX, author: Ursula Schwarzer)
