PM Gati Shakti Initiative: Data and maps will be made available to the private sector

The Union Budget 2025-26 of 1 February 2025 has included significant measures to support the PM Gati Shakti initiative which aims to further optimize infrastructure development in India.

Integration of PM Gati Shakti in the Union Budget 2025-26

1. Accessibility of data for the private sector

The budget provides for data and maps from the PM Gati Shakti portal to be used for private sector accessible and real-time data is available to inform strategic decisions by entrepreneurs. This should improve the planning and implementation of infrastructure projects and create new opportunities for public-private partnerships (PPPs).

2. Multimodal connectivity

The improvement of digital infrastructure, including geodata, and optimization measures for air cargo facilitiesn, are intended to increase logistics efficiency. Together with the   Bharat Trade Net Platform i, a digital trading platform that facilitates international trade and the exchange of goods, makes supply chains – even for sensitive goods – more resilient and effective.

3. Growth in the real estate sector

PM Gati Shakti is expected to lead to an increase in demand for industrial areas and warehouses , especially in Tier-I and Tier-II cities. [Tier I cities are the largest and most economically important cities in a country that have a strong international presence and exert a significant influence on the economy, such as our Indian locations Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune... Tier II cities are smaller cities that nevertheless have significant regional importance and have grown rapidly in recent years. They are often regional economic centres but do not yet have the international influence of a Tier I city, e.g. Jaipur, Coimbatore, Indore, Vadodara…].

Experts even predict an increase in demand in the premium real estate sector of 30-40 million square feet in the key markets, which is approximately XNUMX million square feet. 2,8 to 3,7 million square meters.

The Gati Shakti Initiative (PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan for Multimodal Connectivity) was launched on October 13, 2021 by India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Gati Shakti can be translated into English as "power of movement" or "power of speed". "Gati" means "speed" or "movement", and "Shakti" stands for "force" or "energy". This initiative is about accelerating and improving infrastructure development in order to drive growth and development faster and more effectively.

The initiative aims to coordinate the various ministries and state agencies to enable seamless planning and implementation of projects in the areas of road, rail, air and water transport and to reduce the hitherto high logistics costs through better planning and improved connectivity. Gati Shakti uses a digital platform that integrates data from 44 ministries and 36 states.

As a master plan, the Master Plan integrates various national programmes such as Bharatmala (road development), Sagarmala (port modernisation) and UDAN (regional airport plan), thereby creating a unified framework for development.

Conclusion

India continues to step up its efforts to improve infrastructure in all areas. Supply chains are becoming more robust and faster. Comprehensive digital solutions are driving this process forward. The real estate sector is benefiting from the increased demand for industrial production space and storage capacity.
