Following Chancellor Angela Merkel's visit to India to reaffirm the strategic partnership between India and Germany, representatives from the Aachen region traveled to the subcontinent at the beginning of February 2008 to strengthen and expand existing contacts on a political, cultural, scientific and economic level .

“On our trip, we not only promoted the Aachen economic region as a location for companies interested in locating, but also gained an overview of the possibilities for regional companies to enter the market in India,” said Dr. Jürgen Linden, Mayor of the City of Aachen, who led the delegation. For the Rector of RWTH Aachen, Professor Dr. Burkhard Rauhut, initiating new collaborations with Indian research institutions and deepening existing connections was an important concern. “So far we have been working with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chennai as part of the German Academic Exchange Service, which I was able to get an idea of on site,” said Rauhut. He would like to convey to Indian students and lecturers the attractiveness of RWTH. There are currently around 200 Indian students enrolled at the university - this number has more than quadrupled since 2001.

In addition to a meeting with the German Ambassador Bernd Mützelburg and representatives of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) in New Delhi, the visit program included company visits in the cities of Gurgaon and Noida, the most important satellite cities in the industrial belt around Delhi.
